Scams: Calls, Emails, and Fraudulent Checks
Unfortunately, there are many scams out there, and they come in different forms. Some scammers use phone calls to coerce someone to give away their personal information. Other scammers disguise emails to look legitimate (such as from a well-known company) to steal your card information. Here are a handful of current scams to watch out for:
Email Scam: “Delayed Package” – A current scam involves emails that seem like they are coming from well-known package delivery companies. These emails typically ask for you to update your card information so that your package is not delayed. The goal of this scam is to steal your card information. The best thing to do is not open the email, but if you already have, do not respond with any sensitive information, or click any links. Head to your internet browser instead to locate the correct website where you can check the status of your package or get the correct phone number to call the company directly.
On-Line Job Scam – If something sounds “too good to be true,” it most likely is. Most on-line job postings are scams. If you have received a check from a job posted on-line or on social media, please let us know by giving us a call. Our knowledgeable staff will be able to help you determine whether the check is legitimate, which will not only put your mind at ease, but also protect your hard-earned money.
Phone Scam: “Cancel a Large Purchase”– Another common scam going around right now is phone calls from scammers posing as employees of a large, well-known online retailer. The scammer will ask you for your card information over the phone to “cancel” the fake charge. The best way to proceed is to hang up and go through the company directly to find out if there were actually any issues with your package. If you are concerned that there may be a charge on your OTIS account or that you gave out sensitive information, please give us a call.
If you have questions regarding your OTIS account and are concerned that you may have been the victim of a scam, please give us a call as soon as possible at (207) 897-0900. We would be happy to assist you.
